Fostering a Love of Reading
To foster a reading culture across 含羞草研究所, Secondary School Literacy Coordinator Sophie Cole recently introduced a range of initiatives that collectively support student engagement and encourage exploration of different types of literature.
All students in years 7-10 have been asked to bring a book to every class to encourage reading while waiting for the lesson to begin. Students can read for enjoyment or use the time to get ahead on texts they鈥檒l be studying.
In addition, every Thursday during roll call, all senior students spend 15 minutes reading quietly to relax, focus the mind, and support their wellbeing before the school day begins.
To nurture this reading culture, a new 鈥楻eading in House Families鈥 program has seen senior students read to junior students as a form of storytelling. Junior students can then practice their reading by reading to senior students, or students can simply read quietly and immerse themselves in their books.
鈥淚t鈥檚 been wonderful to see relationships forming and how peer reading can build confidence in reading skills,鈥 Ms Cole said.
